Self Expression through Play.

There’s no denying that unreachable beauty standards are still present. Modern forms of self expression, however, have become a huge force in subverting this.
Makeup artist Tina Fishbach, paired with photographer Jonas Muller and stylist Philippa Crooks in a collaboration with Boss model Sanele Xaba to explore the concept of self expression through play.

To be able to express yourself as you wish with your own body as canvas can be hugely empowering. Especially in a world where bodies are policed by archaic gender and racial stereotypes. There’s liberty in creating something for yourself through makeup and clothing. Something personal and unique that you have control of.

The graphic, modern and stylized nature of the looks string together monochrome simplicity, the chaos of absurd creativity, and the calm that comes with finding peace with yourself. For a moment reality is suspended in this dreamlike fiction. A space you can create yourself, for yourself.

When there is play, the mainstream expectation for beauty loses its power. The very nature of experimentation and identity exploration is what is beautiful and captivating. Your power lies in being able to choose how you play with your canvas.
